Going Where God is Leading
A sermon series by Rev. Richard Rhoades exploring Life on the Edge.
Moving into a new home. Starting a new job. Entering retirement. The death of someone we love. A dear friend moving far away. A child heading off to college. Each are moments of transition and tension.
Each of these experiences hold vast potential and risk. And each of these moments is a time of spiritual growth – where God is stretching our faith helping us grow in who we are as children of God.
This sort of space is referred to as “liminal” space. The word liminal, comes from the Latin word limens, which means, “threshold”. It refers to that time when one has stepped away from the tried and true, but have not yet embraced a new “tried and true”. It is that in-between time. It is laden with possibilities and fear.
The Gospel of Jesus calls us intentionally into liminal space – Jesus walks with us to the edges of life where possibilities and fear co-mingle. Jesus calls us out of our comfort zones to places of new life and beginnings.
