Galveston Island’s first-ever PET-A-PALOOZA – a fun and free family event for pet lovers and a special day for one’s four-legged family members – takes place Saturday, April 29th, between 10am -4pm. Benefiting exclusively the Galveston Island Humane Society and presented by Classic AutoGroup Galveston, PET-A- PALOOZA will be held on the courtyard area and grounds of First Lutheran Church on Winnie Street, between 24th and 25th Streets in historic downtown Galveston. Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the legendary Pee Wee Bowen and his band – long recognized as one of the most popular entertainers in the Houston/Galveston region. Also, during the day, Ball High School Media Arts students – in partnership with MyBayArea Radio – will be broadcasting live-remote from the festival grounds and sharing all the fun and excitement with a listening audience throughout out the Houston/Galveston area.
This new event will feature a main staging area/ring in the courtyard – highlighted with pet and pet owner competitions including Best Costume , Best Pet Dance Move, Best Pet Hairstyle and Best Pet Trick contests. A Shelter Spotlight Parade and Galveston Police Department K-9 demonstrations will round out the day’s main ring activities. Ribbons will be awarded for the top three winners in each of the contests.
In addition, volunteers from the Galveston Island Humane Society and other local shelters will present animals up for adoption. There will also be a special competition for “Best Decorated Shelter” as participating animal shelter/humane organizations from Galveston County and the surrounding Gulf Coast area vie for this top award.
Also, attendees can obtain valuable information about proper pet care from local veterinarians manning the “Ask the Vet” booth – providing the perfect opportunity to ask questions about one’s existing or new “best friend” adopted at the event! And, as a special incentive to visit the booth, the first 25 pets brought to the “Ask the Vet” booth will be micro-chipped for FREE!
In addition to canine activities in the Main Ring, families can look forward to their children having fun in the Kid’s Zone, with face-painting, pet paw print art, and Zoo Olympics, to name just a few of the fun activities planned.
Everyone is encouraged to come hungry as four of the area’s most popular Food Trucks will be offering a variety of food favorites – including pizza, sandwiches and burgers, Caribbean Cajun, Puerto Rican and Mexican cuisine. Food truck vendors participating to date include Jenny From the Block, OffBeat Eatz Food Truck, Saltwater Cowboy Grill, and Don Juve’s Food Truck. Wine, beer, soft drinks and bottled water will be available for purchase throughout the day.
Shopping will also highlight the day’s activities, as vendors showcase their signature products/services in both The Lyceum (indoor, air-conditioned venue on the grounds) and outside. Vendors to date include Bone Voyage, Vintage Pet Beds, Jewelry Designers Karla Mock and Margaret Canavan, Healthy Paws, Cruise Cats, Gone Coastal Jewelry, Animeals on Wheels, For a Cause Resale and Bungee Pupee.
The day’s activities will begin at 10am with a “Blessing of the Animals,” officiated by the Reverend Richard Rhoades, Pastor, First Lutheran Church. Competition will begin at 11am and continue until 3.30pm.
